My priority as a doula is to understand, and then actively support, what is important to each woman before, during and after giving birth. Throughout this process I invite an atmosphere of trust, both in our bodies and in birth itself. In this way I hope to facilitate a fulfilling birth experience for you, and the gentlest possible beginning for your baby.
I discovered my passion for the birth world over a decade ago, when a good friend asked me to attend the birth of her first child. In addition to my experience with both home and hospital births, I have the following skills and qualifications:
- ALACE Labor Assistant Training
- Doula training with local midwife Mary
Shaw
- MA in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute
- Certified Massage Therapist with advanced training in prenatal, labor and postpartum massage
- Co-founder of the Gibian Wellness Center, Santa Barbara
- Extensive dance and yoga training
- Over 15 years experience teaching creative movement and dance for children
Perhaps more meaningful than any of the above is my own experience in giving birth to our son, Jaia, who was born at home in 2002.
"Giving birth is a profoundly transformational experience. When a birthing woman is supported emotionally, physically and spiritually by those around her, this experience can be uniquely empowering, even healing. And when a child emerges into this circle of support, he or she can relax into the world, trusting."
