One of the most important things we can instill in new parents is a sense of self-confidence: confidence that they have an innate and unique ability to parent their child to the best of their capabilities able to make the right decision for their child’s well-being, with all the relevant information available to them. Self-confidence as a parent can manifest in a greater ability to attune to their infant and to respond more effectively to the infant’s many needs in the early months and years of life. With increased attunement can come a more secure attachment between parent and child and a happier, healthier family environment. I see my work as a postpartum doula and infant massage instructor as being in support of this aim of fostering secure attachments between all children and their primary caregivers.
I have experienced first-hand the shock of the “Now what?” moment when you arrive home with your newborn. As a postpartum doula, it is my intention to help bridge the critical transition from being a childless adult to becoming a parent, a transition that can last well beyond the first 6 weeks postpartum. I am able to provide non-judgmental, compassionate and informed support in the areas of infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills. Additionally, I am a certified infant massage instructor and am able to offer instruction (either privately or in small groups) to parents and caregivers on this wonderful modality. Infant massage has been shown to help optimize a child’s physical and emotional development and can also provide relief from discomfort such as colic.
Originally from the UK, I have lived in Santa Barbara since May 2004 and I am the mother of a young son. I am currently completing my Masters in Somatic Psychology from the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute and am in the process of becoming a DONA-certified postpartum doula.
